Oedipus at Colonus by Sophocles is a play that is often compared to King Lear. The leading characters are both old men, disgraced, banished and driven to the edge of insanity but in both the men achieve a sort of redemption, which is what Hecht’s poem is about. It’s coming to terms with failure; the way other people look at failure or what they perceive as dreadful acts.
