Riders in the cutting horse ociation?

I have noticed in the NCHA, there are pro riders that are riding other peoples horses (in a futurity, derby.etc) theyre not the owner or trainer, just a rider. I was wondering how owners "pick" their riders (what do they look for in a rider?) and how much does the rider get paid?
